Dancing Differently

According to David LaChapelle, Krump is “..the alternative to the bling-bling, tie-in-with-a-designer corporate hip-hop thing.“ My first encounters with moshing or slamdancing track back to Ukraine and I have no footage of it. Unfortunately. As much as I like the word “dancing“, never would I think that all the world’s vocabularies have enough words to explain what some particular body is expressing at some particular moment. Because it is far beyond the movement only. Krump is an illustrative example of it.

LaChapelle's documentary Rize tells the history of Krump – of how a ghetto community found a way to transform the street and express the feelings of the oppressed in a non-violent way. London's Krump scene proves several of the main Krump characteristics: it is far from commercialised hip hop, it is a place for anyone with any body shape and of any age to express oneself.
